(Based on criminal law in various US states.) Sometimes you might be charged with sex crimes even when you didn’t think that you should be. A sex crime sticks to you, it follows you everywhere. It can and will change your work, social, school, even your housing life. They can twist your life upside down and make it unlike anything you’ve experienced before. All of this, even when you didn’t even know that what you were doing could be charged as a sex crime.
You, me, and most other people have done something during their lifetime that could be considered a sex crime. There is a vast array of things that, if you’re not careful, could nail you with a sex crime charge, the consequences of which might never leave you.
You might have committed a sex crime if you’ve:
- Had sex or committed a sexual act in your car: In most states having sex or engaging in any kind of sexual contact while in your car, even if it’s on your own property, in an area that it is remotely possible for the public to see, is considered indecent exposure and can be charged as a sex crime. Even if you have a camper shell and tinted windows you can still be charged!
- Mooning or flashing: Another case of indecent exposure, flashing and mooning can both land you as a sex crime offender, riding on graces Megan’s Law. This seemingly harmless prank or mardigras activity can potentially ruin your life!
- Streaking: Some people that have had one too many or made a foolish choice during a college football game can face sex crime charges! That’s right, streakers can be charged with the same kinds of punishments as rapists under certain legislature.
- Public urination: That’s right, folks! Going #1 in a nearby bush or alleyway can be a sex crime. Any time you’re exposed, people can and will file citizen’s arrests, and the cops will have to honor it. Don’t make this kind of mistake!
Ok, you get the point. Sex crimes can be interpreted for a lot of different things in a lot of different circumstances. The good news, however, is that with a good attorney, most of these offenses won’t get past the courtroom, and if they do, you won’t end up on a Megan’s Law website. That’s not the kind of risk you should take lightly, however. Be sure to pick up the right kind of defense for your case, and get the best that you can. It’s not worth risking the wall of lawsuits you could face if your case goes sour.
